World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 Changing the Narrative

September 10, 2024

The theme for WSPD 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”.

Suicide is an extremely complex issue. It is important that we shift from a lack of understanding to a culture that embraces education, openness, empathy, and support driven by community engagement.

Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10, aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention and the steps we can all take to help prevent it.

Every year, millions of people worldwide are affected by suicide, which remains a leading cause of death, particularly among young people. WSPD encourages open discussions about mental health and reducing the stigma that often surrounds these conversations. By fostering an environment where people feel safe to share their struggles, we can help those in need seek support and find hope.

The day features various events and activities aimed at educating communities about the signs of suicidal behaviour and effective early intervention strategies. Workshops, seminars, and social media campaigns are organised to promote mental health resources and encourage individuals to be proactive in helping others.

Additionally, WSPD emphasises the importance of self-care, an area in which we specialise in. At The Laughter Clinic we actively promote the Mental Health Benefits of Humour and Laughter and their ability to help reduce levels of stress, anxiety and depression.

This year we are proud to be partnering with Limitless Community Care to put on a FREE Laughter Clinic Mental Health Community Event on Friday, Sept 13th · 6:30 – 8:30pm at the Pimpama Sports Hub in Southeast Qld. This presentation is all about promoting better mental health and suicide prevention through the power of humour, laughter, self-care, and community support. This community led event offers the perfect balance of humour and laughter with easy to remember mental health self-care strategies.

We all have a role to play in helping to prevent suicide and simple actions, such as learning to recognise warning signs like hopelessness, isolation and burdensomeness can make a significant difference, while learning how to offer support is equally as important.

Look after yourself dear reader and look after those around you.
