The Laughter Clinic Podcast: Where Comedy Meets Mental Health.

In an inspiring new podcast, comedian and suicidologist Mark McConville brings together two seemingly unrelated worlds – stand-up comedy and suicide prevention. The Laughter Clinic Podcast represents a unique approach to mental health education, combining evidence-based information with accessible, engaging delivery that makes even the most serious topics approachable.

McConville’s journey into the intersection of comedy and mental health began with a profound encounter in 2012. While performing on a cruise ship, he met a couple who approached him after his show – the wife in tears. She expressed heartfelt gratitude because her husband, an ex-soldier who had been injured in Afghanistan, had not laughed out loud for three years until that night. This soldier confided in McConville that the one-hour comedy show had done more for him than three years of counselling and post-traumatic stress management. This powerful moment sparked McConville’s curiosity about the healing potential of laughter and humour, leading him to research the scientific basis behind the age-old saying “laughter is the best medicine.”

What makes McConville’s perspective particularly valuable is his personal experience with mental health challenges. For 15 years, he navigated his own depression, trying various treatment protocols and medications. A turning point came in 2010 when he connected with healthcare professionals who recognized that he had been misdiagnosed – he actually had undiagnosed ADHD rather than depression. This revelation led to appropriate treatment and significant lifestyle changes that transformed his life. His personal mental health journey, combined with his professional background in comedy and later academic pursuits, created the perfect foundation for the work he now does.

Most remarkably, McConville’s encounter with the soldier and his wife inspired him to pursue formal education in suicide prevention. At 45 years old, he enrolled at Griffith University, completing a graduate certificate in suicide prevention studies before earning a master’s degree in suicidology. His unique combination of real-world comedy experience and academic credentials led to his appointment as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention.

The Laughter Clinic Podcast offers three distinct episode formats designed to support different aspects of listeners’ mental wellbeing journeys. Solo episodes explore specific mental health topics and practical self-care strategies that listeners can apply immediately. The “TLC Pulse” episodes share five curated insights from around the world in mental health, suicide prevention, and humour research – like the fascinating finding that just four minutes of laughter positively affects the brain, or that doctors in the UK are now socially prescribing comedy. Finally, the Chatting With episodes feature conversations with remarkable individuals sharing powerful stories and insights, beginning with Craig Coombs, who was given 18 months to live in 2012 yet continues to inspire others with his philosophy to “make the rest of your life the best of your life.”
