Strong Mental Health Protective Factors

Protective factors play a crucial role in preventing suicide by means of counter-balancing the risk factors and promoting mental well-being. Understanding and fostering these protective factors is essential in building resilience and supporting individuals in times of crisis. At The Laughter Clinic, we recognize the importance of creating a supportive environment that cultivates these protective factors to safeguard against suicide.
Humour has been reported as among the top eight of 24-character strengths and is associated with increased life satisfaction and life pleasure. it is therefore justified to be included in the list of recognised protective factors associated with positive mental health.
Strong social connections are a key protective factor against suicide. Having a network of supportive friends, family members, or work colleagues can provide a sense of belonging, purpose, and emotional support. These relationships often offer a safety net during challenging times.
Effective coping skills are also vital protective factors. Having healthy coping mechanisms, such as problem-solving strategies, stress management techniques, and positive self-talk, equips you with the tools to deal with adversity and regulate your emotions effectively.
Access to mental health resources and professional support is another critical protective factor against suicide. We do acknowledge the current burden on the mental health system in Australia and how hard it can be to get in to see a mental health professional. That is why all these protective factors are so important.
We are lucky in Australia that we have a raft of support services available, many of which are free to the public. They need our financial support though.
Promoting a culture of open communication, destigmatizing mental health issues, and raising awareness about suicide prevention are additional protective factors. Encouraging honest conversations, active listening, and empathy can create a safe space for individuals to seek help and share their struggles without fear of judgment.
Other Protective Factors can include:
· Responsibility to family (children, spouse/partner)
· Compliancy with treatment, and help seeking behaviour
· Restricted access to lethal means
· Good physical and mental health (especially in old age)
· Constructive use of leisure time (enjoyable activities)
· Religion or having a faith of some kind
· Hopefulness and plans for the future
By strengthening these protective factors and fostering a supportive community, we can work together to prevent suicide, promote mental wellness, and build a brighter, more resilient future for all. Join us at The Laughter Clinic as we strive to create a world where hope, connection, and laughter shine as beacons of light in the fight against suicide.
Look after yourself dear reader and look after those around you.
